Yours Truly, Angry Mob is the second album by English rock band Kaiser Chiefs. It was released on 23 February 2007 in Belgium and the Netherlands, on 26 February 2007 in the rest of the world and in late March in North America. The album was preceded by the release of lead single “Ruby” on 19 February (see 2007 in British music).[1][2][3] It became the band’s first (and to date, only) number one album in the British album charts.
Once again produced by Stephen Street, producer of the band’s debut album Employment, Yours Truly, Angry Mob is lyrically darker and more socially aware than its predecessor, with tracks dealing with street crime, violence, fame, and the inaccuracy of tabloid articles.
The band had earlier revealed to NME in October 2006 that they had recorded 22 songs and hoped to whittle that number down to 13 or 14 for the final album.[4] Additionally, in July 2006 the band revealed to Gigwise that they’d hoped to have the album released by Valentine’s Day 2007.[5] The album was leaked in its entirety on February 21, 2007. The album was criticised by Blur frontman Damon Albarn, who likened it to his own record The Great Escape.
Track History:
“The Angry Mob” is a song by English indie band Kaiser Chiefs and is the title track to their second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob. The name “The Angry Mob” is also the name of the band’s fanclub and is possibly the inspiration for the band’s blog. The song was released in the UK as the third single from Yours Truly, Angry Mob on 20 August 2007[1]. The song discusses the way in which the media encourage knee-jerk reactionary thinking, and the way society at large keeps people under control via the tabloids and 24-hour drinking culture.
The video was first shown at 23:00 on 23 July on Channel 4. It depicts the working-class hen-night culture and culminates in two separate hen parties coming together in a “gang war” style fight after they have been banned from a high-class restaurant ‘NOBLESSE’ at the request of the upper middle-class diners. The diners gather at the window to enjoy the spectacle of the two groups that have turned on each other, however the hens then decide to unite to confront the diners instead. The video was directed by W.I.Z.
The single will come with special artwork created by Dandy/Beano artist Nigel Parkinson, and features caricatures of the band with various Beano characters. People can pre-order a special 7″ single containing an exclusive Beano poster.
Despite only reaching #22 in the charts, it has received significant airplay on contemporary radio stations
Lyrics:
I can prove anything
I’ll make you admit again and again
I can prove anything
The way that it’s read again and again
And its only cos you came here with your brothers too
If you came here on your own you’d be dead
Its only cos you follow what the others do
Its no excuse to say your easily lead
You can choose anything
You choose to lose again and again
You could do anything
Why should you do anything again
And its only cos you came here with your brothers too
If you came here on your own you’d be dead
Winding yourself up until your turning blue
Repeating everything that you’ve read
And here we go with the letter
Well can you fix it for me
Cos we need entertainment
To keep us all off the streets
So tonight you’ll sleep softly in your bed
You can try anything
And no-one would know apart from you and me
You can stop anything
It’s starts with just one and turns to two then three
Its only cos you came here with your brothers too
If you came here on your own you’d be dead
Raise a glass or two
You raise a fist or two
Get a shopping basket wrapped round your head
So here we go with the letter
Oh can you fix it for me
24 hour drinking
To keep us all off the streets
So tonight you’ll sleep softly in your bed
We are the angry mob
We read the papers everyday day
We like who like
We hate who we hate
But we’re also easily swayed
